You are welcome to the fifth International Conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong Sub-regional countries, organized by University of Public Health, Yangon, Myanmar and supported by China Medical Board and World Health Organization.

This conference is an opportunity not only for the public health professional among Greater Mekong Sub-regional countries, but also the public health professionals from the countries outside the GMS region, who are interested in public health come together to share and discuss public health for the future.

We have chosen as the theme for this year’s conference, "Evidence-based health policy: current status and future prospect" since we consider practicing "evidence-based health policy" can enhance the improvement of health status of our people in the region.

The objectives of the conference are

- to provide significant opportunities for all partners who work on the health related fields to share and discuss on their ideas, experiences and lessons on health improvements and development within the GMS Countries

- to enhance the quality and relevance of educational and training program in evidence-based health policy in public health among GMS Countries.

The expected outcome of this conference is more understanding professional networking and collaboration for the health improvement, focus on evidence based health policy among GMS Countries. In this year’s conference, we have invited a distinguished panel of overseas and local speakers to share their wealth of experience and expertise on a wide range of issues including promoting health policy and system research, universal health coverage and health financing, prevention of non communicable diseases, promoting International Public Health, enhancing role of other sectors in health and reaching the vulnerable with essential health services.

The organizing committee has planned an exciting program, consisting of keynote address, panel discussions, oral and poster presentations, as well as pre conference meeting and post conference workshops and market place. The conference will be a rare opportunity to hear local, regional and international speakers, sharing their latest research and providing fascinating perspectives on public health issues, action and practice that are of critical importance. It is also a great opportunity to exchange ideas and foster collaboration on an international scale with over 500 local and international delegates of various interdisciplinary backgrounds, and ranging from healthcare professionals to researchers and academia. I hope you have the opportunity to visit interested destination around the Yangon including famous 2600 years old Golden Shwe Dagon Pagoda, during your stay in Yangon, the historical and economic capital of Myanmar. You can also enjoy the Myanmar culture, the taste of variety of Myanmar foods and the smile and hospitality of Myanmar people. 5th International Conference on Public Health among GMS
Background

Over the past decade, there has been rapid economic growth and improved human development in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS). Nevertheless, there are still concerns over limited achievement in health, particularly among disadvantaged populations. Increasing migration, demographic transformation, climate change, and technological development pose additional challenges to progress and require public health education to remain relevant and effective. To respond to these problems and ongoing challenges, the Deans and the Rector of the 14 public health academic institutions of the countries in the GMS met on Friday 14th September 2012 in the city of Kunming in Yunnan Province, People Republic of China, and agreed to establish the Greater Mekong Sub-region Public Health Academic Network. This GMS Public Health Academic Network aims for a shared vision of achieving the highest possible level of health among our people in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. The Network’s member institutions will work together to enhance regional capacity for addressing major public health challenges through the delivery of education, research, and policy advocacy for health equity in the region.

The 1st GMS countries’ Public Health Conference on “Primary Health Care in Globalization" was held in Khon Kaen University, Thailand on 20-21 August 2009. From this conference onwards, the leaders from network of the faculties of Public Health in the GMS countries agreed to organize the conference yearly and each University should take turn in holding the periodic conference.

The 2nd international conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong Sub-Regional countries was hosted by the Faculty of Public Health, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue, Vietnam on August 30-31, 2010, with the theme on "Challenges and Opportunities for Collaboration of Public Health Training and Research in Globalization" The 3rd international conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong Sub-Regional countries was hosted by the Faculty of Postgraduate Studies, University of Health Sciences, Ministry of Health, Vientiane, Laos PDR, on 9-10th August, 2011, with a theme entitled "Global Preventive Public Health Challenges among Greater Mekong-Sub Region". The 4th international Conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong Sub-Regional Countries was held in Kunming, China from 15-16 September, 2012, with the main theme entitled "Emerging Public Health Issues among the Greater Mekong-Sub Region: Challenges and Opportunities for Global Collaboration". This conference provided a significant opportunity for all partners who work on the health related fields to share and discuss on their ideas, experience, and lessons on health improvement and development within the region.

The 5th international Conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong Sub-regional Countries (5th ICPH-GMS) for 2013, will be hosted by the University of Public Health, Yangon, Myanmar, from 28th to 29th September 2013, with a main theme entitled "Evidence-based Health Policy: Current Status and Future Prospects".

4. Language
The official language of the conference is English. There will be no simultaneous translation.

The Registration Counters are located at The National Theater.
Delegates may collect their conference materials at the Registration Counters.
Name badges are provided and delegates are required to wear the badges for identification purpose and admission to the various sessions.

8. Opening Ceremony The Opening Ceremony will commence at 0830 hours on Saturday 28 September 2013 at National Theater.

9. Liability
The organizing committee is not liable for personal accidents, loss or damage of private property of registered participants during the conference. Delegates and accompanying persons should make their own arrangement with respect to personal insurance.

INFORMATION FOR SPEAKERS, SESSION CHAIRS AND POSTER PRESENTERS

a. Registration

All Speakers have to register at the Registration Counter and upload their PowerPoint at the time of registration or tea break.

b. Reporting Time

All speakers have to report to the secretariet member of their session one hour before the start of the paper reading session. All speakers should familiarize themselves with the date, time and place of their sessions

c. Slides Format

All presentations are to be saved in Microsoft presentation format.For Mac users, please bring along your laptop and adapter.

d. Time Keeping

Each paper will allow for 10 to 12 minutes respectively. The timer will sound 2 minutes before the end of your presentation allocated time. Kindly adhere strictly to the allocated time as the session will have to end promptly to avoid delays.

e. Equipment

The room will be equipped with microphone, projection screens, LCD projector and notebook computer. The notebook computer connected to the LCD projector will be controlled directly by the presenter at the rostrum.
